The Truth About Yasmin

|
Birth control has been in the news lately, not only as a topic of political conflict, but also as a warning of unexpected side effects. Yasmin, or drospirenone ethinyl estradiol, affects some young women in negative ways because proper warnings were not issued for the oral contraceptive. As a birth control pill, Yasmin helps to prevent pregnancy with 99% efficiency when taken as directed. For many young women, Yasmin also helps to treat and prevent moderate forms of acne and mild to severe PMS symptoms. In order to prevent pregnancy, Yasmin helps to prevent ovulation while also thickening the inner linings of the uterus to minimize the possibility of conceiving a child. However, Yasmin does not prevent STDs or HIV.

Although Yasmin provides available means of preventing pregnancy for women who take the pill, Yasmin also has serious side effects that were not properly noted on the label. Birth control pills containing drospirenone have been known to cause dangerous side effects—blood clots. Women experiencing symptoms of shortness of breath, temporary vision loss, chest pain, nausea or vomiting, severe and consistent headaches, numbness in an extremity, or trouble speaking should seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms such as those listed above, may suggest a life threatening and even fatal conditions involving blood clots. Developed blood clots may lead to strokes, heart attacks, or pulmonary embolisms, where the clot is lodged in the lungs, causing life disabilities and even death. The risk of serious side effects worsens when first taking the pill, or if taking the pill again after stopping the pill for a period of time of a month or more. Do not smoke while taking Yasmin; smoking constricts blood vessels while Yasmin increases the likelihood of developing a clot. If concerned about any possible side effects while on Yasmin, please consult a doctor to discuss your options and health.

Due to the recent coverage of Yasmin in the news, Bayer Healthcare, the manufacturer of Yasmin, created new cautionary labels and health warnings to adequately warn women of the possible side effects of taking oral contraceptives with drospirenone. By creating new labels, Bayer Healthcare attempts to relieve the company ofmanufacturer’s liability forfurtherclass action lawsuits. If you or someone you love has taken Yasmin, or other forms of birth controlcontaining blood clotting agents, please seek professional medical aid. Personal Injury Attorneys located in Long Beach, California can then help to seek monetary compensation for physical injuries or emotional distress that Yasmin may cause.
